Baseline Breakdown: Chris Duhon PDF Print E-mail
Written by BigC
Chris Duhon running the pointNo one has been harder on Chris Duhon than me. This season we have seen Duhon throw up more bricks than a master brick layer. Not only that he has been turning the ball over more than the pancakes at IHop. Last month there was even a point that he was shooting 27% from the field. That being said, Duhon right now is playing better and has looked like the player we saw last year around this time who looked like the Knicks MVP early in the 2008-09 season.

In the month of December Duhon’s has had some good games looking like a decent point guard. No, he’s not Steve Nash at this point but Duhon is playing solid. In December Chris Duhon has had games where he scored 25 points, 22 points, 18 points, 17 points, and even 18 points in a game. Not mention he dropped 10 assists twice. If Duhon can keep this up at this rate.. watch out. The Knicks will either be winning games or at least stay competitive.

What we are witnessing is a player that is playing the pick and roll game so good it would make John Stockton smile. From the outside Duhon is knocking down open 3 point shots, sometimes even with a man in his face. Not to mention when the shot is not there, Duhon is driving to the hole. Hopefully Duhon will keep this up and will not run out of gas like last year. Right now Duhon is playing 34 minutes a game which is a huge concern. Especially with the way he finished last year looking hurt or not able to contribute to the team.

Here are a few things I feel Duhon needs to do to finish the season strong:

  1. Play less minutes. Too many minutes will cause him to burn out like last season. He has already played 7 games in the month of December at 34 plus minutes a game. Two of those games were in the 40’s.
  1. Look more for the cutter. We already know that Lee and Duhon have a good conection on the court. However, I would like to see Duhon look to more players like Harrington, Chander, Danilo, Bender, and Jeffries when they cut to the basket. Those are easy passes that Duhon should look out for.
  1. Take more midrange shots. Too many times you see Duhon only take 3 point shots. It would be nice if he could head fake his man and move in closer for the 20 foot shot.
  1. Drive more to the hole Good things happen when Duhon drives to the hole. He is either going to make a good pass to the cutter or score. I don’t see enough of Duhon driving to the hole. For a guy playing point guard he has to be more aggressive.
  1. Play more up-tempo. If he pushed the ball more the Knicks would be able to score more points before the Knicks opponents setup their defense.

6. Step it up on defense. Duhon has to do a better job fighting through screens and having his hands up. It often looks like he gives up on the play once his man has gotten past him. Not to mention he has to stay with his man.
