Walker Is A Keeper PDF Print E-mail
Written by BigC

New York Knicks' Bill Walker (5) shoots over Detroit Pistons' Richard Hamilton (32) during the first half of an NBA basketball game Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in New York. The Knicks won the game 128-104.(Big C)- Walker is a man on a mission. There's no relation to  Jimmy Walker (that skinny dude from "Good Times") but his game is still “DY-NO-MITE” (you know I had to throw that in there).

Right now people are wondering if Walker is going to be here next season. Bill Walker is a keeper, I will say it again, Bill Walker is a keeper.  We all know about his jumping ability but let me just add on what he can do offensively.  Walker also knocks down the 3 point shot like there is no tomorrow.

Last week  there was a rumor spreading around that the Knicks would be interested in Kyle Korver. At this point I will say “not interested”. Why should the Knicks go for Kover at a higher salary when they can keep Walker at around $850,000 a year?

We all know Korver is one of the best shooters in the game but is he really worth the money just to shoot the 3 point shot?

With Walker shooting 42% from beyond the arc the Knicks might have their answer for a spark plug off the bench and a shooter. And get this, he shooting 54% from the field. Why look for another shooter that may want a big payday to come off the bench?

When the Knicks first acquired Bill Walker he was supposed to be just an athletic freak. However, he is proving people wrong day by day. Whether he is starting or coming off the bench he is a breath of fresh air.

Walker has only played 30 games this year. Within the 30 games 22 of those games have been in a Knicks’ jersey.  If Walker is the real deal, it remains to be seen.  All I know is what I have seen from him as a Knick and he's consistent with hitting the outside shot. Once he is in the game he is effective. Let's face it, he works well in the plan for rebuilding the Knicks.

The most surprising aspect of this game beside his new 3 point shot is his calmness’. Most young players come into the league jacking up shots, missing assignments or just making poor decisions on the court. However that is not Bill Walker. Bill Walker is a player who let’s the game come to him. He does not just Jack up shots. He waits patiently until he has a good shot available.

So far he plays like player that has been playing basketball for years.  If the shot is not there you can believe that he's going to drive hard to the hole. He is becoming a tough cover for his opponents, especially now that he is hitting the 3 point shot to help spread the offense.

At 6’6 I think he can be a solid shooting guard. Depending on what direction the Knicks go, Walker could be a starter or bench player. We have seen him play  both forward positions. On offense playing the small forward he has looked okay. At the forward positions on defense  he looks a bit lost. He is either getting silly fouls or getting posted up.

In order for Walker to play defense at a higher rate I think he needs to play shooting guard full-time. He also seems to flow better scoring against defenders his size at the shooting guard position.

At the end of the day Walker has been pleasant surprise.  Even though he is not a superstar he can be a contributor on the Knicks in the coming year.

“Electrifying” and “Smooth like butter.” That is Bill Walker’s game.
