Landry Fields: Ready to Deliver PDF Print E-mail
Written by BigC
Landry Fields(Big C) Good news: summer league is finally over. One thing that I was very pleased with was the play of rookie Landry Fields. For a player that really was not on anyone’s mock draft or, in some cases, people never even heard of him. Landry Field stepped into summer league with something to prove.

Let me just say, the kid put in work. Many players come into the league and it does not matter if they are drafted number 1 or 51 there is still a big chance that they are not NBA ready. However, ladies and gentlemen, I am happy to inform you that Landry Fields is NBA ready. Unlike many players that come into summer league throwing up shots or just trying to do too much. Fields stayed calm, cool, and consistent for the entire Summer League. He let the game come to him.

On Offense

From what I saw it looks like he can score from anywhere within the arc area. Fields excels best using his mid-range shot. Despite him being relatively slow he is still able to take his man off the dribble with a crossover or using a jab step.

Most of Fields’ moves start in the triple threat position allowing him to either drive, shoot, or pass. Fields is definitely a wing player that likes to setup where he can create his own shot or a shot for his teammate. I also like the fact that at 6’7 he is able to post-up. He is a player that can play with his back to the basket or straight.

In summer league we saw him gain position with ease and post-up his man to fade-away or drive from the post position. It is clear that Mike D’Antoni can use him as a small forward to backup Gallo or playing short minutes at the shooting guard position.

I also like the fact that he gets to the line. Many times when he drives to the hole it’s either a hard layup or him making a 3 point play. Landry Fields also is a player that does not give up on plays. We saw him a few times hit the offensive glass for a rebound and go back up strong. He was a tough force to stop from driving or pulling up off-the-dribble..

Defense

Fields looked good playing help defense, blocking shots, and getting steals, but he still has to work on his one-on-on assignments. With his long wingspan he could become one of the better players in the league at getting steals. There were also a few times he got lost trying to stay with his man. This led to Fields picking up silly fouls.

Weakness: Fields is slow and will have trouble guarding quicker players in this league. He also needs to work on his decision making at times. I thought he turned the ball over too many times.

Even though he is very successful at knocking down the midrange shot I think he needs to work on the NBA 3 point shot. He also needs to work on his foul line shooting if he is going to continue getting to the line.

Overall, Landry Fields looks like he is ready to contribute this season. No, I’m not saying he is a superstar in the making. However, I do feel he can be a solid role player in Mike D’Antoni’s rotation.
