Many people who know Cal Ramsey, for his involvement in the community and for the Knicks, they can tell you how he is one of the best people to talk too. I had the pleasure of talking with him and asking him how he felt about about the Knicks and the players. One player that Cal Ramsey is a big fan of is new Knicks point guard Raymond Felton.
Here is the story Cal Ramsey shared with me about the Knicks getting Raymond Felton and his conversation with film director and super Knicks fan Spike Lee.:
“When Amar’e Stoudemire was at the press conference I went over to Amar’e and then I went to Spike Lee and I was telling him that now that we have Amar’e we need to go out and get Raymond Felton because he can play. Spike Lee told me {…now I totally started imagining Spike Lee’s voice at this point…} ‘Why would we want him? Michael Jordan don’t want him. Larry Brown don’t want him. Why would you want him?’ I told Spike that Raymond has talent. And sure enough the next day we signed him [Felton].”
“I’m really glad the Knicks got him. Raymond Felton is a sleeper. People are sleeping on him and he can play. Watch when people see him play the pick and roll game. He is good at running up and down the court. He is a terrific point guard. He’s not an elite point guard but he is right there. He is a step below. He’s good. Felton will be a big asset to the team this season."-Cal Ramsey
As you know, I like the pick up of Raymond Felton, “The Reason”, for the Knicks. Felton was the best available guard in free agency this summer. I also view him as being one of the main pieces that will help the Knicks improve this season. Felton is a guy that can run the pick and roll which is the Knicks strongest play. Unlike Duhon, Felton can get in the paint and score.
Like I have said before he is gifted at running the uptempo game and the halfcourt set. My main knock on Felton has been him not being able to complete the shot when he drives to he hole. He also needs to work on his jumpshot though last year he started making improvements in this area.
On the Knicks I expect him to continue growing and have an even better year now that he has a coach who is familiar with his game and a system that is tailor made for him.
This might be the season that people wake up from sleeping on Raymond Felton aka “The Reason”. *** I will post the rest of my interview with Knicks Director of Special Projects & Communties and Hall of Famer Cal Ramsey later this week.
