Bill Russell On Stephon Marbury PDF Print E-mail
Written by BigC

The latest news in the "World Of Stephon" is Bill Russell believes that the Knicks have caused Marbury mental damage. Here is what was reported by the New York Post:

"Bill Russell believes Stephon Marbury can continue to help the Celtics in the playoffs -- if he's able to get over what the Knicks did to him.

"If it's up to the team, he'll have a positive effect," the 75-year-old NBA legend told The Post yesterday at the NBA Store in midtown.

"But you don't know how much he's been damaged psychologically playing here."

"Here" of course, is with the Knicks, where his rocky tenure came to a disastrous end when it became clear that coach Mike D'Antoni had no intention of playing him and team president Donnie Walsh long refused to buy him out of his $21 million contract.

When asked if he thought the point guard indeed had been "damaged psychologically" by the Knicks, Russell said: "He may have been. No matter how strong you are, that kind of stuff that went on this season was so ridiculous." Read More

With due respect to Bill Russell, he is so wrong on the Stephon Marbury topic. If anything it was Marbury who caused psychological damage to his coaches, teammates, and even some fans while he was in New York. Russell has to be reminded that Marbury's issues started way before he joined the Knicks. On the Nets and Suns Marbury was disliked. Marbury's antics continued to a higher level with the Knicks and his teammates (from fighting Quentin Richardson to Kurt Thomas to even having a confrontation with Isiah Thomas on the Knicks plane. Whether it was a guy like Isiah Thomas who looked out for Marbury to guy like Larry Brown you get the same results; you get burned by Marbury.  Bill Russell has to understand that the Marbury he is  getting to know on the Celtics is a guy that knows he has to be on his best behavior because this might be one of his final stops. The Celtics locker room is also very strong. Therefore Marbury is not going bring his antics to Boston when he is the odd man out looking for a new contract and a permanent home.
