Roger Mason:Clutch Shooting and Veteran Leadership PDF Print E-mail
Written by BigC

Roger MasonBig C) You may be wondering why the Knicks signed Roger Mason Jr.. The reason is the Knicks are looking for outside shooting and veteran leadership. Every team needs good veterans and Roger Mason Jr. is just the guy for the task.

Roger Mason Jr. is a 6’5 guard that can play the point and shooting guard positions. On the Knicks he will most likely play the back up point guard position. I expect Mason and second year player Toney Douglas to compete for the backup point guard position. So what can we expect from Roger Mason Jr.? Here is the run down.

Roger Mason Jr. is a guard that has a good handle that bring the ball up through pressure and get the job done. There is not thing fancy about his dribble but he knows how to get the job done. Many guards in the NBA try to do too much.

Roger Mason on the other hand is a smart player that does exactly what the coach asks him to do. Beside having good ball control he is an excellent passer. It’s very rare that you will see Mason lose control of the ball or make ill advised passes.

Good decision making is what any team needs from a veteran player like him. The best skill is being able to knock down the 3 point shot. Mason is one of the league’s best shooters. So on nights that the Knicks are looking to get back into games you can expect to see him on the court with Danilo Gallinari to bring the team back.

With Mason being an outside shooter, he can spread the floor allowing guys like Anthony Randolph, Wilson Chandler, and Amare Stoudemire to drive to the hole. If Mason is on the floor you can bet that his man is worried about leaving him. Not only is he able to knock the 3 point shot down Roger Mason is the definition of the word clutch.

There are only a select few players in this league who can be described as clutch players. Whether they are bench players or superstars, many players find it difficult to deliver in pressure situations. This is why Mason is a big deal. In the past he has won big games for the former champion Spurs. He is a lock defender who is good at getting on his opponents last nerve. He is also good at running the break and finishing.

The negatives

Even though Roger Mason is a good outside shooter he rarely drives to the lane. Many times you will find him just hanging out on the perimeter. He will have to mix it up if he is going to become a well round player. He can also be erratic with his shot selection.

Overall, Mason is a good player that can provide outside shooting, defense, clutch shooting, and leadership on the court and in the locker room. Watch out if the Knicks use the 6'5 Roger Mason to play point guard position. The days of big guards posting up much smaller Knicks guards might be over. Mason's clutch shooting will help the Knicks close out games. This is big since the Knicks have lost many games in the past by a few points.

At the end of the day this is good signing at 1.4 million for one year.
