(Big C) Even though the Knicks are losing games there is an up side to all this. The up side is the gameplay of Knicks rookie Landry Fields. People may have slept on Landry Fields in the draft but he is quickly getting attention by many. The Knicks staff and Donnie Walsh are more than pleased with Fields' hard work and dedication. Landry Fields maybe a rookie but he plays like he is a veteran. In fact he could run a seminar on how to score without dominating the ball. There are many things that coaches can tell a player to guide them in what they need to do for the team. However, the fundamentals that Fields displays comes naturally and cannot be taught. So far Landry Fields looks like a true student of the game. Fields does not do one thing good, he does many things good and is a complete player. So what is that Field does well?
Cutting to the hole He is excellent at cutting to the hole. While many players in the league like to stay in one place when they are not getting the ball, Fields finds a way so score by cutting to the hole. This keeps Fields' man busy trying to guard him. Not giving up plays Many times when players see their teammate shoot the ball they do go after miss shot to get a rebound. Fields continues to find ways to follow up shots that his teammates have missed.
Going after loose rebounds. Fields is quickly becoming one of the best rebounders on this Knicks team. Despite setting up on the wing most of the time he still finds a way to get offensive rebounds. On the defense end of the court if a shot is going up Fields is going to crash boards to get it.
Not forcing shots. While many players take the shots that the defense allows them to take Fields creates the shot is best for his team.
Knowing how to run on the break as well as leading the break 5. Fields is excellent at pushing the ball as well as finishing scoring on the break.
Overall, Fields is a solid player that knows the fundamentals of basketball. The main area he needs to work on is his man to man defense, which I feel will eventually get better with more time in the NBA. Fields help defense so far is good. Who knows? Landry Fields just might emerge as the best kept secret in the 2010 draft.
